5 Signs It's Time to Scrap Your Car

Repairs costing more than the car, rust through the frame, or a vehicle that just sits. Here's how to know when it's time to let it go.

Every car reaches the point where keeping it costs more than it's worth. The tricky part is recognizing that point. Here are the five signs we see most often.

1. The repair bill beats the car's value

When a mechanic quotes more than the vehicle would sell for, the math has already made the decision. A $3,000 transmission for a $1,800 car isn't a repair, it's a donation to the repair shop.

2. Rust has reached the structure

Surface rust on a fender is cosmetic. Rust through the frame rails, rocker panels or suspension mounts is a safety issue, and it fails safeties. Ontario winters and road salt are hard on metal, and once the structure goes there's no cheap way back.

3. It's been sitting for months

A car that hasn't moved in six months isn't getting fixed next weekend. Meanwhile it leaks fluids, collects flat tires and, depending on your municipality, can attract bylaw attention. Every month it sits, it's worth a little less.

4. The problems keep stacking

One dead battery is a Tuesday. A dead battery, a grinding transmission and an engine that overheats is a pattern. When the list of issues costs more than the car, scrapping beats nursing it along.

5. Insurance wrote it off

If your insurer totalled the vehicle after an accident, buying it back to fix it rarely makes sense. The damage that triggers a write-off is usually structural, and structural repairs don't pay.

What to do next

If any of these sound familiar, a scrap quote answers the real question: what is it actually worth today. It's free, takes a minute, and there's no obligation to accept the number.
