Car Won't Start? How to Sell a Non-Running Car in Ontario

Car won't start and not worth fixing? How to sell a non-running car in Ontario without paying for a tow, plus what your dead vehicle is still worth.

The car won't start. Maybe it's a dead engine, a transmission that gave up, or an electrical gremlin your mechanic quoted four figures to chase. Whatever the cause, you're now the owner of a very heavy driveway ornament. The good news: a non-running car is still worth money, and selling one in Ontario is easier than most people expect.

Why a car that won't start still has value

Running condition affects what your car is worth, but it doesn't zero it out. A dead vehicle still contains:

  • Scrap metal. Steel, aluminum and copper are priced by weight, and they don't care whether the engine turns over.
  • Reusable parts. A car with a blown engine often has a fine transmission, alternator, doors, panels and interior. Those have real resale value.
  • The catalytic converter. Worth money whether the car runs or not, sometimes more than everything else combined.

That's why buyers advertise "we buy non-running cars." The vehicle is worth parts and metal, not just transport.

Should you fix it first?

Almost never, if the goal is selling. The repair that would get the car started costs money out of your pocket, takes days you may not have, and usually adds less to the sale price than it cost you. A $1,500 starter-and-wiring job doesn't raise a $900 scrap offer to $2,400. Sell it as it sits and let the buyer deal with the mechanics of it.

The exception is a genuinely cheap fix with obvious payoff, like a dead battery on an otherwise good car you're selling privately. For a vehicle going to scrap, skip it.

The towing problem, solved

The traditional pain point with a non-running car is that it can't drive itself to the buyer. Private buyers won't come get it, scrapyards charge for pickup, and calling a tow company yourself can cost $150 or more around the GTA.

Working junk car buyers absorb that cost. Our non-running car removal service includes the winch and flatbed for free with every purchase, whether the car is parked on a driveway, stuck in a garage, or sitting in a lot. You don't pay for the tow, and you don't arrange it.

How the sale works

  1. Describe it accurately. Year, make, model, what it does or doesn't do, and where it's parked. "Doesn't start" is enough detail on the mechanical side.
  2. Mention access. Garage, tight driveway, blocked in by another vehicle, no wheels. None of these are dealbreakers, but the driver needs to know what they're arriving to.
  3. Have your ownership permit ready. Same paperwork as any vehicle sale. Lost it? ServiceOntario replaces it quickly.
  4. Get paid at pickup. We winch it, you sign the transfer, payment changes hands. The car doesn't need to move an inch under its own power.
