Selling a Wrecked or Damaged Car After an Accident in Ontario

Insurance wrote off your car, or it's too damaged to repair? Your options for selling a wrecked or broken car in Ontario, and what it's worth.

An accident, a flood, a fire, a failed safety. However your car ended up damaged, you're now holding an asset that won't drive and won't sell on Kijiji. Wrecked car removal exists for exactly this situation, and in Ontario you have more options than most owners realize.

First, figure out where you stand with insurance

If the damage came from a collision and you filed a claim, your insurer's write-off decision changes your options. When a vehicle is declared a total loss, you typically choose between two paths: take the settlement and let the insurer keep the car, or keep the salvage and accept a smaller payout.

Keeping the salvage only makes sense if you can sell it for more than the deduction. That's where a damaged car buyer comes in. Before you decide, get a scrap offer in hand so you're comparing real numbers, not guesses.

No claim filed, or the damage isn't insurance territory, like flood, fire or long-term mechanical failure? Then the vehicle is simply yours to sell.

What a wrecked or broken car is still worth

Damage scares off private buyers but barely registers with scrap buyers, because the value was never in roadworthiness. It's in:

  • Weight. The steel doesn't care about the crumpled fender.
  • Undamaged parts. A car hit in the front often has a perfect rear half, interior, wheels and drivetrain components. Fire and flood damage are harder on part value, but not automatically fatal.
  • The converter and alloys. Precious metals and aluminum rims price independently of body damage.

Be honest about what happened when you request a quote. "Rear-ended, still rolls, airbags deployed" prices differently than "burned to the shell," and an accurate description is what keeps your offer firm at pickup.

Your three real options

1. Sell it to a damaged car buyer. Fastest and simplest. You get a firm offer, free flatbed pickup and payment at the curb. Our damaged car removal service buys collision, flood and fire-damaged vehicles across Durham Region in exactly this shape.

2. Part it out yourself. More money in theory, much slower in practice. You're running a small auto-wrecking business: stripping, listing, shipping, and eventually paying to remove the shell anyway. Worth it only if you have the time, space and skills.

3. Donate it. Charitable vehicle programs exist in Ontario and will tow it free. You get a tax receipt rather than cash. Reasonable if the receipt matters more to you than the money.

Salvage titles and paperwork

Ontario brands written-off vehicles as "salvage," and nobody will ever put yours back on the road under a clean title. That doesn't affect selling it for scrap. You still sign over the transfer portion of the ownership permit, and the vehicle goes into the recycling stream where branding doesn't matter.

Moving forward

A wrecked car sitting in your driveway isn't getting less wrecked. If you want it gone and paid for, request a quote with a few photos of the damage. We'll tell you exactly what it brings, and the flatbed is included.
