Why Buyers Ask About Your Catalytic Converter

That small part under your car can be worth a surprising amount. Here's what it is, why it matters, and how it changes your scrap offer.

If you've ever requested a scrap quote and been asked about the catalytic converter, it's not a trick question. That part alone can shift your offer up or down by hundreds of dollars.

What it actually is

The catalytic converter sits in your exhaust system and cleans up emissions before they leave the tailpipe. Inside is a ceramic core coated with platinum, palladium and rhodium. Those are precious metals, and rhodium in particular has been extremely valuable for years.

Why it affects your offer

Buyers price converters separately from the scrap weight of the vehicle, because the metals inside are worth far more than steel. A car with its original converter intact is worth meaningfully more than the same car without it. If a converter has been replaced with an aftermarket unit or removed entirely, the offer drops accordingly.

The theft problem

Converter theft is common across Ontario because of those precious metals. If your car suddenly sounds like a lawnmower, that may be why. Vehicles that get parked a long time are easy targets, so a dead car sitting in a driveway is worth securing.

What to tell your buyer

Be upfront about the converter's status: original, replaced, or missing. It takes thirty seconds to check, and honesty here means your quote holds firm at pickup instead of getting revised on the spot.

The bottom line

When we ask about the converter, we're not looking for a reason to pay you less. We're trying to give you a number that's right the first time. Check the box on the quote form if it's intact, and your offer will reflect it.
